Observations

Each of us has a unique point of view on our living environment, which we can further develop through observation. In the workshop, we will draw from a number of surprising perspectives, play with “human camera”, and finally, present these works that feature different aspects of the same reality.

Observation invites us to pause for a moment, think, pay attention to details, and learn new things about ourselves and our surroundings. Such moments are rare in everyday life, and we should be conscious and attentive to them, as they allow us to develop a creative-aesthetic view of the world. Artistic, architectural, and performative tools empower such capabilities and drive actions.

Buildings and the City

Most urban dwellers live in apartment buildings. In the workshop, we will prepare a model of a building, and experiment with urban planning. We’ll discuss the difference between private and public spaces, streets and skyscrapers, and find answers to the question, Why do we live in buildings?

Billions of people inhabit the world, and most now live in cities. The building allows more people to occupy less space, but public spaces grow smaller. This trend raises questions about the city’s future: will we continue living in buildings? Do we even want to live together, or is it just the current situation?

Our Body and the  City

We will examine the physical, emotional, and metaphorical aspects of the relationship between the human body and the urban structures and functions. We'll study relevant artworks, mark meaningful locations in Tel Aviv-Jaffa on the map, and create our personal cartography.

Close your eyes and let yourself hover above the city. Look down, and imagine your body stretching along its borders. The human body and the city are linked through the places humans have lived, loved, walked, studied, and did things for the first time.

The Circle and Public Square

Let’s look at the circle’s location in the city. What is special about this shape? Where do we encounter circular motion? In the workshop, we will draw freehand circles, focusing on one of the most well-known roundabouts in town: Dizengoff Square. Then we will employ poetry, text, painting, and sketching to design a plaza.

The circle is an abstract, egalitarian, and endless geometric shape that appears in various contexts - from pizza to urban planning. Is it significant to urban planning, and what does it represent in reality and our imagination.

The Ruler and the City

Does the world fit our dimensions? In the workshop, we will make a wooden folding ruler fitted to our body, learn about the proportions of the human body, and measure the city in relation to it.

Go to the window: humans designed everything you see. Tel Aviv was man-made with meters, rulers, and other accessories, but does it match our dimensions? The first measurements humans invented were the forearm, the pinky, the foot - intuitively accessible elements that helped us learn about ourselves, the world, and how to adapt our habitat to our needs. We will learn about the city and our connection to it using our bodies and handmade measurement tools.

Observations

Sunlight connects our home to the outside world, allowing us to see and be seen. In the workshop, we will build a model of our room, study the light entering through its miniature windows, and place it on the Tel Aviv-Jaffa map on the Liebling Haus rooftop - facing the sun.

Our indoor lighting changes throughout the day, as the light from the solar system comes through the window. We will explore the sunlight and its significant presence in our lives, and position ourselves in relation to the sun in the immediate and distant environment.

The City as a Composition

Is composition a coincidence or a deliberate formation? In the workshop, we will use our bodies to create two- and three-dimensional formations, alone or in a group. We will play and change the work to alter its meaning, documenting everything with drawing and painting.

We encounter compositions every moment of every day: on the street, in art or architecture, the relationship between lines and shapes surrounding us, and the arrangements of furniture in our house. Understanding things are not fixed and predetermined, that someone decides how to organize them, and it could be us, allows us to influence and change reality.

Saturday 2.5

 12:30 - 13:30

Urban Fanzine

In the workshop, we will create a fanzine featuring an alternative guide to Tel Aviv, and experiment with typical collage techniques using newspaper clippings, colored papers, prints, and handwriting.

A fanzine is an independent medium of expression for research and contemplation, composed of mixed-media: poems, stories, articles, illustrations, paintings, graphics, comics, photographs, collages, and more. The fanzine thrives on imagination. It’s an informal, raw channel for thoughts, feelings, dreams, fantasies, or frustrations, where we can protest against anything - where everything is allowed.

Performance

What is performance? We will try to find that out as we explore the surrounding area through unusual physical activities inspired by artists working in the public sphere. We will study time and space, experiencing the feeling of performing in front of an audience.

The artist’s body is the artwork; it’s a material, just like clay or paint. Performance allows us to take a routine action, place it in a different context, and give it a whole new meaning, teaching us something new about ourselves, the world, and the way we operate within it.
